Smiley Dental Waltham proudly accepts MassHealth patients, including eligible individuals enrolled through the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS). We understand that patients with disabilities may benefit from compassionate, personalized care and a comfortable dental environment.
Our team welcomes DDS patients of all ages, including children, teens, and adults. We can also help verify MassHealth eligibility, explain available benefits, and coordinate care with DDS case managers when appropriate.
Smiley Dental Waltham welcomes patients who receive MassHealth benefits and are enrolled with the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS). Our Waltham office is set up to support children, teens, and adults who live with an intellectual or developmental disability, along with the parents, guardians, caregivers, and residential staff who help them get to their appointments.
We know that finding a dental practice that truly understands developmental disabilities isn’t always easy. Our clinicians take extra time with every visit, explain each step before it happens, and adjust the pace of treatment to match what each patient needs.

We are currently accepting new MassHealth and DDS patients.
Not long ago, MassHealth’s dental plan paid the full cost of covered treatment for adult members, without a yearly ceiling. That has changed. Adult members now have a $1,750 per-person annual limit on dental benefits.
There’s an important carve-out to this rule: adult MassHealth members who are DDS clients are not subject to the $1,750 cap. Their covered dental treatment continues to be paid in full, the same way it was billed before the limit took effect.
Because this exception depends on active DDS enrollment, our front desk confirms each patient’s MassHealth and DDS status before treatment begins, so families know exactly where they stand financially.
No.
Massachusetts’ MassHealth dental policy sets a $1,750 annual benefit limit for adult members age 21 and up but it specifically excludes members who are DDS clients. That means DDS-enrolled adults keep their full dental coverage with no annual dollar cap.
Coverage details can still vary by individual case, so we always verify eligibility and benefits ahead of each appointment.
DDS serves Massachusetts residents with a qualifying intellectual or developmental disability. Patients we regularly treat under this program include those with:
DDS itself determines who qualifies for its services, while MassHealth and the MassHealth Dental Program determine what dental benefits are covered. If you’re not sure whether a family member’s coverage includes the DDS exception, our staff can walk you through what to bring to your first visit.
MassHealth’s dental benefit covers a wide scope of care for DDS clients, based on clinical need, age, and the specific procedure. At our Waltham practice, that includes:
For patients who find it difficult to sit through a standard dental appointment, MassHealth’s dental benefit also covers anesthesia services, including nitrous oxide, IV sedation, non-IV sedation, and general anesthesia when clinically indicated. We discuss which option fits best based on the patient’s medical history and comfort level.
Adult patients with developmental disabilities often face dental challenges that a typical office visit doesn’t account for, such as the following:
We shape every appointment around the individual in front of us, not a one-size-fits-all script. Caregivers, guardians, and support staff are welcome in the treatment room whenever that helps the patient feel safe.
Many of our autistic patients experience the dental office differently; sounds, lights, and unfamiliar touch can all be harder to tolerate. We adjust our approach case by case, which can mean:
No two patients need the exact same plan, so we build the visit around what actually works for that person.
Our billing and front-desk team handles MassHealth verification regularly, so eligibility and the DDS cap exception get confirmed before treatment, not after.
Our clinical staff is comfortable adapting pacing, communication, and technique for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Parents, guardians, and residential support staff are part of the visit whenever their presence helps the patient.
Preventive, restorative, surgical, and emergency dental care are all handled in one Waltham location.
We work to keep the space predictable and low-stress for patients who deal with dental anxiety or sensory sensitivity.
Smiley Dental Waltham sits in Waltham, MA, convenient for families throughout Waltham, Newton, Watertown, Belmont, Lexington, and the surrounding Middlesex County towns.
Reach Smiley Dental Waltham at 781-666-6000.
Tell our scheduling team the patient has MassHealth coverage and is enrolled with DDS.
Our office checks MassHealth eligibility and confirms how the DDS exception applies before your visit.
We’ll find an appointment slot that fits the patient, family, and any caregiver joining the visit.
